creating the right look for your small bedroom

In today’s day and age buying property is a big deal, the soaring prices are doing nothing to ease the discomfort of the home owner, top it all with the ever decreasing size of the living space provided by the said property to your average budget home owner. If you have a look at any flat in and around a mega metropolis you would clearly understand what I am talking about.

Our houses have become smaller in size but the amount of stuff we keep in our houses is not reducing, on the contrary its increasing with the ever increasing consumerism. Markets are a flood with new stuff and newer wants. Insatiable wants, some very basic and some not so very basic.

As a home owner you would want, that no matter how small your living area it should be able to cater to all your storage needs, from clothes to bed linens to cosmetic, from beautiful china ware to small stuff as table mats. All items that we need occasionally to those that we need regularly, every one of it no matter how small requires a comfortable storage space.

I once had an opportunity to design a house for a newly married couple. Both were working and had no time nor idea as to how they can utilize the limited area their new house gave them.

Let me walk you through the basic layout of their house, it was 1 bedroom hall kitchen flat. With 2  bathrooms. You entered into a living room which was somewhat L shaped so 1 part of the L became the entertainment/guest area. The other L became the dining area which was closest to the kitchen.

The kitchen was a rectangular layout parallel kitchen. Nothing very fancy just that it had a decent dry balcony.

Between the kitchen and the dining area there was a small passage which had the common bathroom, at the end of this passage was the bedroom (master bedroom) with the attached bathroom. This bedroom had a decent sized balcony where you could manage to squeeze in two medium size beanie’s at the most.

Now they approached me thru my friend and asked me if I could help them out here as they were newly married and there were loads of stuff in the form of gifts and impulsive purchases that needed to be accommodated in there and they just did not know how.

Since in this blog we are talking about the tackling a small bedroom which also happens to be the master bedroom,  i will refrain from talking about the living room, and other parts of the house. These will become the topic of my next blog.

Now the size of the bedroom was 8X12 ft. with only 2 walls that could be possibly used for anything as 1 wall was the balcony and the opposite wall was the bathroom door. Usually such a layout is very common and not very problematic, but the scene over here was that the area was very small for a traditional bedroom layout.

The client was very clear that they wanted to have a television in the room and also the wife wanted a proper dressing table. Now these were a must, they also were not very keen on the sofa cum bed idea which some other designer they had consulted had given them. And come on who gives a sofa cum bed in a couples room and that too the only master bedroom in the house, So unromantic and not very classy.

Now if u look at the layout, it isn’t as easy as it seems, I myself had to sit and rack my brains a little, but as they say all’s well that ends well. With some correct planning and space management maximum space can be utilized in our not so maximum sized homes. See getting an expert to do up your home costs you some extra money but it also helps in many ways, now there is a reason we go to doctors when we have the flu. And there is a reason why you should take the help of a certified interior designer with a flair for good design when designing your house.

With the correct planning I could give them not only a proper wardrobe, but all their needs of the television and the dresser also got taken care of, what I could give them in the end was a romantic, yet practical space saving bedroom.

And believe me nothing makes a good designer happier than that oh so happy smile on a satisfied clients face. They got everything they wanted and I got a job well done.
